Art Nouveau was born in the late 19 and early 20 century. Jugendstil or Art Nouveau is the German name of the art nouveau style.

Speaking of Riga, local generally use the term "Art Nouveau" and not "modern". Art Nouveau is one of the branches of the Art Nouveau style, its German variety. Translated from the German Jugendstil means "young style". It got its name from the popular German magazine "Jugend" ("Youth"), which began to be published in Germany in 1896.

From 1902 to 1914 all Riga architects used in his art techniques of modern and, of course, its decorative forms. In Riga building of this time is almost impossible to find a structure in which one way or another is not apparent style of Art Nouveau. This applies even to those buildings that have been created in the spirit of other concepts.

Art Nouveau harakterezuût simple geometric lines and shapes. The architects sought to do as much as possible the decorative facade elements: stylized ornaments, garlands of flowers, sculptures, statues of different animals, women, a meandering covers protections of balconies and stairs, the faces of people. One of the most prominent architect in Riga was Mikhail Eisenstein, who worked in the Baltic State property management, and privately studied architecture. According to Sergei, son of famous film director Mikhail Eisenstein, built around 53 houses in Art Nouveau style.
